watchOS 26 upgrade guide: compatible Apple Watch, iPhone backup, update, first settings

Official watchOS 26 compatibility, iPhone backup, install path, and post-update checks.

When your paired iPhone shows watchOS 26, confirm your Apple Watch and iPhone are on Apple's compatibility list, back up the iPhone to iCloud (watch data rides along), then install from the Watch app or on-watch Software Update — keep both devices charged and on Wi‑Fi.

This release guide follows Apple Support for watchOS 26 upgrade steps: what shipped, which watches and iPhones qualify, iPhone backup before you update, and first settings after install. Facts come from Apple release notes only.

What watchOS 26 adds (per Apple)

Apple's "About watchOS 26 Updates" and fall 2025 platform release describe watchOS 26 as a design and health update. Highlights below come from Apple text; not every feature runs on every model or region.

Smart Stack, Control Center, the Photos watch face, and in-app navigation use Liquid Glass styling while staying familiar, per Apple's watchOS 26 summary.

02

Apple notes hypertension notifications and a sleep score, plus continued health metrics in Vitals where your model supports them.

Which Apple Watch and iPhone can run watchOS 26

Apple's "Apple Watch and iPhone compatibility" table lists minimum iOS and watchOS for each model. Models marked watchOS 26 or later include Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 3 — each requires iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later. Back up on iPhone before you update the watch

Apple Watch does not use a separate iCloud Backup toggle — when paired, its data is stored on the iPhone and included in iPhone backups. Apple recommends backing up before major updates.

  1. 1

Update iPhone to compatible iOS first

Install the latest iOS your iPhone supports (iOS 26 or newer when required). See our iOS 26 upgrade guide for iCloud backup and Software Update on the phone.

  2. 2

Confirm the watch is paired and syncing

Open the Watch app on iPhone and verify the watch appears on the My Watch tab. Finish any pending sync on Wi‑Fi before starting watchOS 26.

  3. 3

Run an iCloud backup on iPhone

Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Stay on Wi‑Fi and power until the timestamp updates — this backup includes Apple Watch content Apple documents for paired watches.

  4. 4

    Charge both devices

Apple asks for Apple Watch at least 50% charged and iPhone on Wi‑Fi. Keep the phone near the watch for the whole update.

Install watchOS 26 (iPhone or on the watch)

Steps match Apple Support "Update your Apple Watch" and the Apple Watch User Guide "Update Apple Watch software."

  1. 1

    Update tonight (optional)

When a notification appears on Apple Watch, tap Update Tonight, then confirm on iPhone. Leave both devices charging overnight on Wi‑Fi.

  2. 2

    Update with iPhone (manual)

Watch app → My Watch → General → Software Update → Download. Enter iPhone or watch passcode if asked. Wait for the progress wheel on the watch; keep it on the charger and do not quit the Watch app.

  3. 3

    Update on Apple Watch

Connect the watch to Wi‑Fi, then Settings → General → Software Update → Install. Stay on the charger until the watch restarts on its own.

  4. 4

If iPhone demands a watch update

Some iOS updates require a matching watchOS so Activity and health data keep syncing — follow the onscreen "Update Apple Watch" alert before finishing iPhone updates.

Still stuck?

Software Update never offers watchOS 26?

Apple says incompatible watches only show the newest watchOS they support. Confirm your model on Apple's compatibility table and in Software Update on the watch or in the Watch app.

Must I update iPhone first?

Apple requires your iPhone on the latest compatible iOS before watchOS updates. For watchOS 26 on Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3, Apple lists iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later.

Does iCloud backup include my watch?

When paired, Apple Watch data is included in your iPhone backup. Run an iCloud backup on the iPhone before major updates per Apple's iPhone backup guidance.

Update stuck on the progress wheel?

Keep the watch on its charger, leave the iPhone nearby, and do not restart either device during install. Apple Support suggests restarting both and deleting a partial update under Watch app → General → Storage if needed.
