iOS 26 Photos app guide: iCloud backup, Library, Search, and Clean Up after upgrade

Official iOS 26 Photos features plus backup, upgrade, and first steps after install.

Already on iOS 26 and wondering how the Photos app splits Library and Collections? Back up with iCloud first, then follow Apple's release notes to open Photos, merge duplicates, tune filters, and—on supported iPhones—try Apple Intelligence search and Clean Up.

This release guide cites only Apple's newsroom and iPhone User Guide for iOS 26 Photos features, backup before upgrade, the official install path, and the Library, Search, and editing features to try first.

What Apple ships in Photos on iOS 26

Apple's June and September 2025 newsroom posts and the "What's new in iOS 26" article highlight Photos updates. Points below come from Apple release notes only.

01

Separate Library and Collections tabs

The Photos app uses distinct tabs for your full library grid versus curated collections like Recent Days, Trips, and People & Pets (Apple newsroom).

02

Search in every view

Apple says you can search from Library, Collections, or within an album. The search field sits in the bottom-right corner; query dates, places, people, events, captions, and media types like Video (Apple Support).

03

Customizable Collections layout

Choose three display sizes, reorder or collapse collections, pin favorites, and adjust autoplay for videos and Live Photos (Browse your photo collections).

04

Sort, filter, and hide clutter

Sort by Recently Added or Date Captured; stack filters such as Edited. Hide screenshots, From My Mac, or Shared with You via View Options (Apple Support).

05

Merge duplicates

Photos surfaces duplicates under Collections → Utilities → Duplicates → Merge. If none exist, the collection is hidden (User Guide).

06

Event recognition

Apple's iOS 26 update notes mention recognition for events like concerts and sports so you can see details and related content (availability varies).

07

Apple Intelligence (optional)

On supported iPhones with Apple Intelligence on, describe photos in natural language, create memory movies, and use Clean Up to remove background distractions (Apple Support; not all models, languages, or regions).

Before iOS 26: back up your library

  1. 1

    Check iCloud Photos

Settings → Photos — confirm sync finishes on Wi‑Fi before you upgrade.

  2. 2

    Run an iCloud backup

Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. See our iOS 26 upgrade guide.

  3. 3

    Free space if needed

Review iCloud storage or older backups per Apple Support if the backup fails.

Which iPhones get these updates

Features ship with iOS 26. Apple's "How to download iOS 26" lists iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Apple Intelligence photo tools need supported hardware and Apple Intelligence enabled.

Not on iOS 26 yet? Official upgrade path (short)

Check compatibility → iCloud backup → Settings → General → Software Update → install → confirm under About.

After iOS 26: open Photos and walk these first

  1. 1

    Explore Library

Confirm the Library tab, browse the grid, jump to Years or Months, and open View Options to zoom or hide screenshots.

  2. 2

    Organize Collections

Switch to Collections, resize tiles, reorder, and pin collections you use often.

  3. 3

    Search

Tap the bottom-right search field; add media types like Video. With Apple Intelligence, try a natural-language description.

  4. 4

    Merge duplicates

Collections → Utilities → Duplicates → Merge when sets appear.

  5. 5

    Try Clean Up if available

Open a photo → Edit → Clean Up and remove highlighted distractions.

  6. 6

    Review Photos settings

Settings → Photos and Settings → Apps → Photos. For AI, see Apple Intelligence setup.

FAQ

No Duplicates collection?

Apple shows it only when duplicate photos or videos are detected. Finish iCloud sync, then check Utilities again.

Library vs Collections?

Library is your full grid and timeline; Collections groups Recent Days, Memories, Trips, and more in curated sections.

Missing Clean Up or natural-language search?

These require a supported iPhone, iOS 26, and Apple Intelligence enabled per Apple Support.

Must I use iCloud Photos?

Apple recommends backing up before major updates. iCloud Backup can include photo data; long-term iCloud Photos is your storage choice per Apple docs.
