What Apple ships in Messages on iOS 26

Apple's June 2025 newsroom preview and the "What's new in iOS 26" support article highlight Messages updates for everyday communication. Points below come from Apple release notes only.

01

Screen unknown senders

Messages can screen texts from unknown senders. Unknown numbers land in a dedicated folder where you mark them known, ask for more information, or delete. They stay silenced until you accept.

02

Pinned conversations

Pin important iMessage threads to the top of the list on iPhone using Apple's "Pin a conversation" steps. CarPlay Messages also supports pinned chats and Tapbacks in iOS 26.

03

Polls and backgrounds

Create polls inside iMessage threads and optionally set custom backgrounds. Apple Intelligence can suggest a poll when useful; Image Playground backgrounds need supported hardware with Apple Intelligence enabled.

04

Writing Tools in Messages

Where Apple Intelligence is on and your language is supported, select text in the Messages composer and open Writing Tools to proofread, rewrite tone, or summarize per Apple Support. Processing stays on-device; menus may vary by OS build.

05

Screening, groups, translation

Unknown-sender screening, group typing indicators, Apple Cash where available, Live Translation in Messages, and the Liquid Glass design ship with iOS 26. Translation language pairs are in Apple's newsroom footnotes.

Which iPhones get these updates

Messages features ship with iOS 26. Apple Support's "How to download iOS 26" lists iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Phones not on iOS 26 will not receive these Messages capabilities separately.

Upgrade to iOS 26 safely (required for these Messages features)

Polls, pins, and Writing Tools arrive with the iOS 26 system update, not a separate Messages download. Apple recommends a backup first and installing only via Settings → General → Software Update. Full steps: iOS 26 upgrade guide.

After iOS 26: open Messages and walk the new options

  1. 1

    Launch Messages

Open the Messages app from the Home Screen. Follow any first-run prompts for permissions or iCloud sync.

  2. 2

    Review unknown senders

Follow Apple's "Screen and filter texts" guide to open the unknown-sender folder and accept, reply, or delete.

  3. 3

    Pin conversations you need fast

Follow Apple's "Pin a conversation" guide so key threads stay at the top; pinned chats also surface in CarPlay Messages.

  4. 4

Create a poll (and optional background)

In an iMessage thread, use "Poll people in a conversation" and "Add backgrounds" when both sides run iOS 26 iMessage in your region.

  5. 5

Try Writing Tools on a draft

With Apple Intelligence enabled on a supported iPhone: select text in the composer → Show Writing Tools. See our Apple Intelligence setup guide if the menu is missing.

  6. 6

    Translation, groups, settings

Turn on Live Translation if needed; check group typing and Apple Cash where available. Tune Settings → Apps → Messages for unknown-sender filtering and notifications.
