Qualcomm Amazon AI Chip Deal 2026: $60B Inference Pact Explained
8 Sep: Qualcomm and Amazon lock multi-gen inference silicon. $60B buy ceiling, ~$4B warrants.
To read the 8 September 2026 enterprise chips story, split two facts: Qualcomm and Amazon will build multiple generations of custom inference silicon for AWS; and Qualcomm issued Amazon warrants worth about $4 billion, at $161.26 a share, that vest as purchases land.
Reuters writes Amazon could buy up to $60 billion of Qualcomm AI data-center chips and related products under a long-term pact. CNBC adds the warrants cover 25 million shares and expire on 3 September 2036. This is a buy-and-finance frame, not a live AWS instance family.
What is actually on the pact
Several generations, aimed at inference
The release says the pair will work across multiple generations of customized silicon for AWS AI infrastructure. The job is inference: run trained models, not stack more training cards.
Optics up to 1.6 Tbps
Reuters: the deal also covers Qualcomm optical communications, including links extending to 1.6 terabits per second, to feed AI halls. That sits on last year’s $2.4 billion AlphaWave buy; Tony Pialis now runs Qualcomm’s data-center chip unit.
Warrants follow the purchases
The SEC filing: about $4 billion in warrants vest with commercial arrangements and purchases of up to $60 billion of server chips and other technology. Qualcomm also said it will expand AWS use for chip-design workloads to shorten cycles.
Line up the numbers already on paper
Ceilings, warrants and ship windows are calmer than “Qualcomm has already replaced Nvidia.”

8 September: the frame lands
Reuters, CNBC and the filing landed the same day: multi-generation custom silicon, inference, optics. Qualcomm shares rose more than 3%. No single-generation part number or list date was printed.
-
2
$60 billion is a purchase ceiling
That is how much Amazon could buy in chips and related products, not a booked order total and not cash already sent to Qualcomm.
-
3
$15 billion by 2029 is Qualcomm’s own target
Qualcomm still points to $15 billion of data-center chip revenue in fiscal 2029. Amazon joins Microsoft and Meta as a named cloud customer. The June Dragonfly C1000 CPU is a Meta line with a 2028 production window; do not flatten it into this AWS inference pact.
Do not write a frame as “the racks already swapped”
| Claim | Public line | Still missing |
|---|---|---|
| $60B deal | Reuters: a ceiling of up to $60 billion in purchases | Not a locked order book |
| Nvidia swap | Explicitly: custom inference silicon against Nvidia-led halls | No training-stack replacement |
| Live on AWS | Multi-generation work; design loads on AWS | No instance name or GA date |
Why buyers and cloud desks care
Opening a Qualcomm custom path for inference is a parallel file to chip-tariff phase 2 and to the AWS–Azure interconnect preview. Do not flatten them into one headline. See chip-tariff phase 2 and AWS–Azure interconnect.
Aligning purchase ceilings and warrant vest lists does not need a full meeting suite: in figmeet a room ID is enough for voice plus a board; see the guide and features.
# Public markers (Reuters / CNBC / SEC, 2026-09-08)
Buyer / cloud: Amazon / AWS
Supplier: Qualcomm (San Diego)
Scope: multiple generations of customized silicon for AWS AI infrastructure
Workload: AI inference (run trained models)
Optics: high-speed optical connectivity, up to 1.6 Tbps
Purchase ceiling: up to $60B of Qualcomm AI data-center chips and related products
Warrant: ~$4B; 25 million shares at $161.26; expires 2036-09-03; vests with purchases
QCOM target: $15B data-center chip revenue by FY2029
Other named cloud customers: Microsoft, Meta
Prior CPU: Dragonfly C1000 (Jun 2026); Meta use when production starts 2028
AlphaWave: $2.4B deal last year; Tony Pialis now Qualcomm data-center chip chief
AWS custom-chip run-rate: >$25B annualized at end of June quarter
Stock: Qualcomm +3% on the day
Peer: Marvell–Google custom-chip deal weeks earlier; Google stake right up to $12.2B
Qualcomm’s release points at multiple generations of custom silicon for AWS AI infrastructure, with an emphasis on efficient inference. Do not rewrite that as “Nvidia has already been dropped from AWS.”
- Inference
- Serving a trained model. Training is the heavier distributed job. That split is the point of this note.
- Warrant
- A right for Amazon to buy Qualcomm stock at a fixed price as purchases vest. It is a finance term, not proof chips have shipped.
- Dragonfly C1000
- Qualcomm’s June data-center CPU for agentic workloads; Meta plans to use it when production starts in 2028. A different line. Do not merge it into this AWS inference pact.
Questions worth checking
Has the $60 billion already been ordered?
No public booked total. Reuters described a purchase ceiling under a long-term pact. Warrants vest as purchases land.
Is this a training chip or an inference chip?
Public copy says inference: run trained models. It does not say AWS will move its training stack onto Qualcomm.
Can you pick a Qualcomm instance on AWS today?
No instance name or general-availability date was printed. What is on paper is multi-generation work, plus Qualcomm putting more chip-design load on AWS.
Is this the same as the Marvell–Google pact?
No. Reuters notes that weeks earlier Marvell struck a similar custom-chip deal with Alphabet’s Google, with a right to a stake of up to $12.2 billion. Similar shape, different buyer and supplier.
