Check compatibility and back up, then install macOS 26 Tahoe through Software Update.
When your Mac offers macOS Tahoe 26, confirm the model is on Apple's compatibility list, run a Time Machine backup, then install through Software Update — do not skip the backup.
This guide follows Apple Support for macOS 26 Tahoe features and upgrade: what shipped, which Macs qualify, how to back up, and how to install. Facts come from Apple release notes only.
What macOS Tahoe 26 adds (per Apple)
Liquid Glass design
Transparent menu bar, Liquid Glass sidebars and toolbars, plus light, dark, tinted, or clear icons and widgets. Control Center and folder colors are customizable.

Back up, then install through Software Update
- 1
Verify your Mac is compatible
Open Apple's "How to upgrade to macOS Tahoe" page and match model year and chip. Unsupported Macs will not see the update.
- 2
Back up with Time Machine
Connect external storage, choose the disk under System Settings → General → Time Machine, and finish a full backup before downloading Tahoe.
- 3
Free storage and stable Wi‑Fi
The installer downloads several gigabytes. Keep notebooks on power. Corporate networks that block Apple CDN may need a different network.
- 4
Open Software Update and install
System Settings → General → Software Update, or Spotlight-search "Software Update." Follow prompts; the Mac will restart multiple times.
- 5
Re-check privacy permissions
Screen Recording, Microphone, and Accessibility may need to be re-granted to browsers or meeting tools under Privacy & Security.

Back up first, upgrade second. Software Update only offers builds compatible with your Mac — avoid unofficial full installers.
Still deciding?
Why doesn't my Mac show macOS Tahoe 26?
If the model is not on Apple's compatibility list, the update will not appear. Stay on your current macOS security updates or plan hardware that qualifies.
Do I need Tahoe 26 for Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence needs supported hardware and OS versions. On M1 or later Macs that qualify for Tahoe 26, enable it in System Settings after upgrading.
The upgrade failed or froze — what now?
Keep power and network stable. Restore from your Time Machine backup if needed. Contact Apple Support with Software Update logs if it repeats.
Software Update vs a full installer?
Apple recommends Software Update: faster, less disk use, and only compatible builds. Full installers suit IT teams deploying many Macs from Apple's official channels.
