How to open a Wise multi-currency account and order the debit card
Official sign-up, your own ID check, currency details, card order, first top-up. Residence must be real; approval is not guaranteed.
If you need to get paid from overseas, convert currencies, or pay a subscription, the search is usually how to open Wise. The only legitimate path is the official site or app: register with your own details, finish identity checks, then request account details, order a card, and make a first top-up.
This walkthrough follows Wise Help for opening a Wise multi-currency account and ordering the debit card: sign-up, verification, local details, card, first transfer. It does not cover proxies, fake residency, or someone else’s ID.
What a Wise account actually does
Wise (formerly TransferWise) is a licensed payments firm, not a traditional bank. A personal account can hold 40+ currencies and convert at the mid-market rate, with fees shown on the confirmation screen. Sign-up is free and Wise states there is no monthly fee. Your account location follows the residential address you register, not the currencies you hold.
A personal account is only for you
You may open one personal account, only for yourself. No joint accounts, and you cannot open one on someone else’s behalf. Personal flows stay on the personal account. Business income needs a business account, with a tax ID and registered address.
Request each set of details separately
Details such as USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, NZD, CAD, HUF, and SGD are not issued all at once, and not every country of residence qualifies. USD details are unavailable in some regions. New RON details are paused. One set of details per currency; personal and business details are separate.
The debit card depends on residence
After you hold currencies, you may order a Wise debit card if you live in the UK, US, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Switzerland, or the EEA. The card spends from the main account in 150+ currencies. Confirm eligibility in Wise Help.
Six official steps
The sequence matches the public register flow and the Help article Guide to getting verified. Labels can differ by country. Trust the prompts inside your account.
-
1
Register only on wise.com or the official app
Open wise.com or the official Wise app from an app store. Tap Register. Use email and a password, or Google, Apple, or Facebook. Choose personal or business, add a phone number for two-step verification, and enter the country you actually live in.
-
2
Enter legal identity details
For a personal account: legal name, date of birth, and address, matching your ID. The name should also match the bank account you will use to add money, because some regions can confirm you from a matching inbound transfer. A business account also needs a tax ID and registered address.
-
3
Complete verification when asked
Wise usually asks for a government photo ID: passport bio page, national ID (both sides), or driving licence (both sides). You may also need a selfie, proof of address, or a right-to-reside document if the ID was issued in another country. Upload only inside the app banner or verification flow — not to a stranger’s email. Larger amounts or some currencies can trigger source-of-funds checks. Wise can request more documents or decline. There is no guaranteed approval.
-
4
Add a currency and request details
Use Add a Currency. The first currency sits in your main account. When you need local receiving details, tap Get account details for that currency and complete any top-up the page asks for (some regions show a minimum). Request each currency separately.
-
5
Order the debit card only if your country is listed
After verification, open Cards. A physical card usually has a one-off issuance fee shown before you pay. Some regions offer a digital card for Apple Pay or Google Pay — check the local product page. The physical card spends from the main account.
-
6
Make the first top-up or transfer
Tap Add money and use a bank transfer or card if your region offers it. Then send a small transfer or convert. The confirmation screen lists the fixed fee and conversion fee. Same-currency transfers between Wise accounts are free. Confirm only after you read the fees.
Where verification and cards stall
| Item | Common mistake | Official path |
|---|---|---|
| Residence | Pick a country that “approves cards” | Use your real address; it sets the entity and terms |
| ID | Someone else’s passport or an edited scan | Your valid ID, uploaded in the app |
| Card order | A card ships the day you register | Finish checks, add a currency, live in a listed country |
| USD details | Everyone gets US account numbers | Unavailable in some regions; check Help |
After the account, keep huddles light
When you need to compare a receipt or a fee with a teammate, skip another meeting install. Open a short room on figmeet, talk and sketch in the browser. Steps: guide. Caps: features.

Finish verification with your real country of residence and your own ID. Shortcuts usually breach the customer agreement and can restrict the account.
- Licence and protection
- Wise safeguards balances. That is not the same as typical bank deposit insurance such as the UK FSCS. No overdraft or loan. Tax reporting follows your country of residence; ask a local adviser.
- One personal account
- Every currency sits in one Wise account. The main account holds everyday balances and is where a physical card spends. Jars and groups separate money; they do not change the account location.
Still stuck?
Can I open an account without a passport?
Many countries accept a national ID or driving licence (both sides). Wise lists acceptable documents for your residence. Expired IDs are usually rejected.
How long does verification take? Is approval guaranteed?
Small amounts are often faster. Extra documents, large transfers, or a residence-right check take longer. There is no guaranteed pass. If Wise asks for more files, upload them only in the official app.
Is Wise available in every country?
No. After you select your real country of residence, the site will either let you continue or stop you. Do not invent a residence to get a card, and do not pay a stranger to open the account.
Must I add money before I order a card?
Some currency details ask for a minimum top-up, which you can spend afterwards. Card eligibility depends on verification and residence. Fees are on the confirmation screen.
